Healthy Habits of Fit People Series: Start Your Day with Fuel

Looking at Nutrition Differently: Fueling Your Body

I am sure many of us have heard that we need to start our day with breakfast, right. But like many of you, the thought of eating breakfast before 10:00am made my stomach hurt.  I was always like this -- from as early as elementary school.  My mom would beg me to eat and I would and I would get sick.  It was worse in high school because my day started SO much earlier.  I quit eating breakfast.  However, by mid-morning I was STARVING and we won't even talk about how hungry I was by lunch time.  OH MY WORD.  I knew how important breakfast was.  "The most important meal of the day".

It wasn't until I got to college and had a little more freedom with my schedule that I started to implement the start of a food schedule that worked with my body.  As a music major, I was typically in a practice room by 7am so I could get in some practice time before my 8am classes.  (Yes, I've always been an early bird!)  My "breakfast" before practice was typically a slice of whole wheat toast and some hot tea.  THEN, after my 8:00 class, a group of us would go to the student center and grab some breakfast.  (and those are some of my fondest memories of college!)

I followed that habit for several years -- in fact, until about 3 years ago that was how I consumed my breakfast.  Wake up - eat some toast/tea - a few hours later a piece of fruit and maybe an egg.  It wasn't until I really started to make a change for the betterment of my health that I NEEDED to adjust this.  I wake up at 4:30am to workout.  I can't eat something BIG, but need SOMETHING to get me through my workouts.  FUEL.  I last eat at 7pm and then NOTHING until 4:45am.  I need something.  Through a lot of trial and error, I found what works for me (and MANY fit people) is a handful of almonds.  8 to be specific.  Sometimes, depending on my workout, I will do a scoop of protein powder instead.

Wait a minute, I told you breakfast was the most important way to start your day, right?  And I start my day with 8 almonds?  That isn't breakfast!  ....and you're right!  It  is NOT breakfast, it is FUEL.  Just like you wouldn't take a trip in your car with an empty tank, you should not workout with an empty tank.  You need energy.

I don't know who determined three meals a day and what is a breakfast food vs. dinner food, but I have learned that by looking at food as FUEL, I not only feel better, but perform better.  I know I've said it before, by Shakeology has greatly helped me with my morning fuel.  Now here is what my morning fuel up looks like:

4:45 am - almonds/ protein powder
6:00 am - Shakeology
8:00 am - oatmeal with fruit
10:30 am - veggies and hummus
