Workout Tip: Squats

Squats are a fantastic exercise to help you stay in shape.  They build full body strength because you use your core to stabilize and keep everything aligned.  Here are a few tips to perform the perfect squat:
  • Stand with feet a little wider than shoulder width apart, hips stacked over knees, and knees over ankles.
  • Roll your shoulders back and down away from ears.  Remember it is important to maintain a neutral spine throughout the movement.  That means you do not allow your back to round.
  • Start the movement by taking a deep breath and unlocking your hips, slightly bringing them back.  Keep sending knees back as knees begin to bend.
  • While your butt starts to stick out, make sure your chest and shoulders stay upright, and your back stays straight.
  • Squat as low as your mobility allows.  Optimal squat depth would be your hips sinking below your knees.
  • With your bodyweight in your heels, engage your core, and explode back up to standing.  Imagine your feet are spreading the floor apart without moving your feet.
