Ten Creative Discipline Ideas for Parents of Toddlers and Teens

Ten Creative Discipline Ideas for Parents of Toddlers and Teens

We've all been there, right? Maybe it is the lack of desire to do homework, forgetting lunch or gym bags, not doing chores.... but if you're a parent, you eventually need to enforce rules and present consequences to your child.
creative corrections discipline
The bible even tells us that we need to provide discipline for our children, and raise them to know the Lord and to know what is right.

This is NOT always easy.  -- but if you have followed my Periscopes or have subscribed to my free devotion series, you have heard me repeat Galatians 6:9 (Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.) numerous times.

In Ephesians 6:1-4 God clearly tells children what to do:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

As parents, it is our (sometimes difficult!) job to teach our children proper behavior, what is right, what is wrong and of course how to CORRECT it.  My #1 parenting tip is to Have a Plan of how you'll handle certain situations. Really sit down and talk with your spouse or parenting partner "What will we do if _____ happens?" and then you are not reacting or totally caught off guard ALL the time. Once thing I've learned (especially as a boy mommy....) is that those occasions of getting caught off guard happen! But we have PLANS in place. Some of our favorite consequences are below and I go more indepth with them in the video below:

  1. Consequences Can / Points System
  2. Bedtime Procrastination = everyone has to STAY up :)
  3. Bedtime time adjusted for positive or negative behavior.  Subtract or add minutes
  4. Mealtime Whining.... everyone must try one bite. No special meals, kids won’t go hungry
  5. Respect - especially w/ older children.  Teach them how to articulate
  6. Do-Overs
  7. Forgetfulness: Natural consequences
  8. Attitude -  re enter room correctly
  9. Door slamming - do it calmly and correctly 100 times
  10. Go to room and continue to cry for 10 minutes or take the tantrum outside/garage/away from people

The Periscope below goes into greater detail and I encourage you to watch it to learn more about our creative corrections and how we implement these strategies to raise healthy and confident children! What is COOL is that you get to see what other moms are doing to be creative with their corrections too! Make sure you download the periscope app and follow me for more daily devotions!

How creative are YOU with corrections?  I'd love to hear your comments below!
