Submit to My Husband..Say What?!

A Devotion on Submission in Marriage -- What Does it REALLY Mean?

If you're like me, the thoughts of not being super strong and independent makes you quiver in all kinds of YUCK!  Me, be a push-over?  ...I THINK NOT!  I'm a woman of the females are strong and powerful and smart!!!  So the thoughts of being submissive equals something I have put off thinking about for a long while.

BUT...alas, if I am going to do a devotion on marriage, God's word and submission needs to be discussed.

Colossians 3:18
18. Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

1 Peter 3:1-2
  1. Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2. when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

Is your view on submission in marriage similar to what mine was? A husband demanding his wife to cook him dinner and a sweet wife who says "yes, dear?" ..... ugh.... How about, YOU, dear husband cook ME dinner :) Yeah, that sounds more like my view of marriage!

But, let's think about what submission means. ...and we're not talking 50 shades either....

If your BOSS/SUPERVISOR tells you to do something, do you do it?

When you read a speed limit sign, do you obey it?

Today, for FaithFriday, I want  you  to think about your husband as a spiritual leader -- as someone who isn’t a “boss” but a leader who you are the helpmate of.

A common lie that women believe is that if they submit to their husband, they’ll be miserable. Submission isn’t about “losing” or being a slave, it’s about seeing your marriage the way God sees the church, His bride. The husband is to lead spiritually, and we are to be his helpmate. If your husband is not the spiritual leader in the family, the wife is to still be reverent and represent God in her daily life.

This excerpt is taken from a book called Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss (which I highly suggest ;))
“When we place ourselves under the spiritual covering of the authorities God has placed in our lives, God protects us. On the other hand, when we insist on having it our way and stepping out from underneath that covering and protection, we open ourselves up to the influence and attack of the Enemy….I have discovered that the fundamental issue in relation to submission really comes down to my willingness to trust God and to place myself under His authority. When I am willing to obey Him, I find it is not nearly so difficult or threatening to submit to the human authorities He has placed in my life.”

*Pray for God to change your perspective on this and to give you a submissive heart.
